This slot will feature pressing thoughts of a moment, week or however long it takes for a new one to arise. Right now, I feel moved to stress a need for spiritual people to regain access to the transcendent Reality of Source and integrate it into humanity’s shared cultural life.
We (Irish) need to access Transcendence, beyond local forms and allegiances, given the state of Earth and a history of double colonisation, political-economic and religious-spiritual, that shattered the memory and coherence of our native tradition. Estrangement from our Mother Tongue compounded the loss. Our writers have wrested gifts from this wound, straining the limits of an alien language to express what couldn’t otherwise be registered. Something similar appears to be involved in my recent work with a deceased Indian saint whose cultural line, despite also being subject to military-political domination, kept a vital thread of spiritual memory intact, all the way back to Source/Consciousness. This deep remembering is now a global human legacy, not exotic indulgence but a resource urgently needed to address glaring fractures in our burning world.
These thoughts first occurred to me regarding Ireland’s 750 plus years history of dual colonisation. In Truth it now applies to our whole planet, with all humanity currently adrift in a fog of illusion created by barrages of ludicrous claims made around a pending global conflict that yet again centres on an ancient/modern Middle East. Here waxing/waning patriarchal-imperial powers continue to vie for dominance. They have always done so in the course of circumscribed historical memory, constrained by layers of unconscious trauma that we habitually replay for lack of any evident alternative. Vedic wisdom provides a means to overcome such chronic alienation. To appreciate and apply it we must regain access to Transcendence as a basic cultural resource: a restorative, regenerative Reality beyond the babble and clamour of our violent immersion in the Wasteland we continue to make of Earth. No matter how well intentioned we may be, even spiritual people who don’t have access to this Re/Source are likely to stay captured in the maya (illusion) and get hurt by it.
